Apple Watch Now Supports Precision Finding for AirTag 2nd Gen

Apple has released watchOS 26.2.1, bringing Precision Finding capabilities to compatible Apple Watch models for the first time. This update allows users with Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, or later to locate AirTag 2nd generation trackers with the same directional guidance previously exclusive to newer iPhones.

What Precision Finding Does

Precision Finding utilizes the Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip present in both AirTag 2 and recent Apple devices (iPhone 15 and later, Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2) to provide precise directional cues. Instead of simply playing a sound or showing a general location on a map, the feature guides you directly to the lost item. The screen displays an arrow indicating direction and distance, much like the experience on an iPhone 15 or later.

How to Update

The update is available now through the Watch app on your iPhone (Settings > General > Software Update) or directly on your Apple Watch (Settings > General > Software Update). The watch must be connected to a charger during the update process.

Why This Matters

Previously, finding an AirTag on an Apple Watch was limited to triggering a sound or viewing its last known location on a map. While those methods work, they lack the precision needed for items lost within a home or office. The new feature solves this problem, offering the convenience of using your always-worn watch to pinpoint nearby items.

The AirTag 2 also boasts an upgraded UWB chip, which is now consistent with the latest iPhones and Apple Watches. This allows for more accurate positioning between devices. The update supports Precision Finding on iPhones as far back as the iPhone 11, which first included a UWB chip.

Beyond Chirping: A Better Way to Find Lost Items

The louder speaker in AirTag 2 still provides the familiar audible tracking method, but Precision Finding represents a leap forward in usability. Relying solely on sound – or, as the author points out, “poorly developed echolocation” – isn’t ideal. Now, your Apple Watch can guide you directly to misplaced keys, wallets, or anything else tagged with an AirTag 2.

The update effectively turns your Apple Watch into another powerful tool for item tracking, ensuring you no longer need to grab your phone just to use Precision Finding.
