Metal Gear Solid 4 Finally Arrives on Next-Gen Consoles in New Collection

22

Konami’s highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 will bring Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to PlayStation 5 for the first time nearly two decades after its original release. The collection, announced during Sony’s State of Play on Thursday, also includes Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, offering fans a long-awaited opportunity to experience both titles on modern hardware.

Long-Delayed Upgrade

For years, Metal Gear Solid 4 has been the only mainline entry in the franchise unavailable on newer consoles. Its absence sparked frustration among fans, as the 2008 PlayStation 3 exclusive remained locked to outdated hardware. Konami’s decision to finally remaster and re-release the game signals a renewed interest in the beloved series.

What’s Included?

The Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 features:

  • Remasters of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Both titles will benefit from improved resolutions, frame rates, and customized controls. Additional quality-of-life upgrades are expected but have not yet been confirmed.
  • Bonus Content: The collection also includes digital screenplay books, master books, and soundtracks for both games.
  • Surprise Addition: A third, smaller title, Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, originally released on the Game Boy Color in 2000, is included. While not considered canon, it represents a curious nod to the series’ roots.

Release Details

The collection will launch on August 27 and is currently available for pre-order on the PlayStation Network for $50. As of now, the PS5 is the only confirmed platform. However, given Sony’s history with timed exclusivity deals (like Final Fantasy VII Remake ), a PC and Xbox Series X|S release at a later date remains possible.

Story Context

Metal Gear Solid 4 concludes the saga of Solid Snake, resolving the overarching narrative threads from previous installments. The game sees Snake on one final mission to dismantle the shadowy Patriots organization that has manipulated global events for decades.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker bridges the gap between Snake Eater and Ground Zeroes, detailing Big Boss’s rise to power as he establishes his own military faction in Colombia and confronts a rival force developing nuclear weapons.

This release represents a crucial step for Konami in preserving and modernizing its iconic Metal Gear Solid franchise, potentially paving the way for future remakes or reboots.

The long-awaited availability of Metal Gear Solid 4 on modern platforms is a significant win for fans, bringing closure to one of gaming’s most influential series on contemporary hardware.
