Apple Prepares Simultaneous M5 MacBook Pro & Air Launch: What to Expect

Apple is poised to deviate from its usual product release schedule, potentially launching both updated MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models concurrently between late 2024 and early 2025. This shift is driven by the readiness of the next-generation M5 chips, which are expected to debut first in the upcoming iPad Pro update as early as this month.

Key Changes with the M5 Series

The M5 update is anticipated as an incremental improvement rather than a radical redesign. The MacBook Pro will retain its current 14- and 16-inch configurations, while the MacBook Air will continue offering 13- and 15-inch models. Notably, despite the availability of Wi-Fi 7, Apple isn’t expected to integrate the newer standard into these machines, sticking with Wi-Fi 6E for now.

Long-Term Roadmap: 2026 Overhaul

More substantial changes aren’t slated until the end of 2026, when the M6 chip is expected to bring a major overhaul. Rumors suggest this will include a long-awaited touchscreen OLED display, a slimmer chassis, and potentially a new overall design. A refreshed Apple Studio Display is also planned for the first half of 2025—the first update since 2022.

Budget Option on the Horizon

Looking further ahead, Apple may introduce a lower-cost MacBook Air model priced around $599 by late 2025 or early 2026. This move would cater to students and budget-conscious buyers, filling a gap in Apple’s current lineup.

In essence: Apple is prioritizing chip advancements over immediate design overhauls, with significant changes reserved for the M6 generation. The simultaneous M5 MacBook release signals a faster product cycle, while the budget MacBook Air indicates a potential shift towards broader market accessibility.
