Apple has stopped letting anyone shop the student store. You need to prove you’re in school now.
For a while, it was the Wild West. Apple relied on an honor system. You clicked “Education Store,” you pretended to be a freshman, you walked out with a discounted laptop. No questions asked. The MacBook Neo alone saw a $100 price drop that anyone could grab.
That changes this week.
Apple is verifying your identity now. You have to prove a link to an educational institution before the cart processes. It’s a common tactic in retail. Discounts for teachers, students, even first responders? They usually demand proof. Apple just dragged its feet on it until now.
Enter Unidays.
Apple brought this third-party verifier back. Remember when they tried this in 2022? Users revolted. Complaints flooded in. Apple caved, dropped the verification, and let everyone buy again.
Now they are doing it again.
To buy from the education catalog, you log through Unidays. It checks if you’re a current student. Or newly accepted. Or a parent buying for said student. Faculty counts too. Homeschool teachers are on the list, all grades included. If you are none of those? You get bounced.
Most verification happens instantly. Sometimes it takes up to twenty-four hours. It feels like bureaucracy, but it’s necessary if you want that price break.
Why care? Because without that discount, the deal dries up fast. Amazon. Best Buy. B&H. These retailers often slash prices on Apple hardware to compete. When Apple’s own discount vanishes, those third-party stores often look better.
Apple also added Apple Watch discounts to the store last week. A nice perk if you actually have a .edu email address.
