It is July 13. Puzzle number 1128. If you love cats, you will love today’s NYT Connections. Seriously. It’s almost made for us. Or maybe it’s just a coincidence.

Cat-lovers, today’s puzzle is purr-fect.

There is a bot for Connections now. Just like the one for Wordle? Yes. Go visit it after you play. The program analyzes your moves, gives you a score, and generally critiques your brain. If you registered on Times Games, you can watch the data stream in. Win streaks. Perfect scores. How many puzzles you’ve beaten. It feeds the nerd side.

The Hints

We need to find four groups. They range from easy to painful. Yellow is straightforward. Purple? Not so much.

Yellow group: Answer the questions.
Green group: How you hold on to something?
Blue group: Think Garfield. Also Heathcliff.
Purple group: Pucker up.

The Answers

Did you get them right? Here is what actually belongs where.

Yellow: Interrogate
The theme is questioning someone. Hard.
* Examine
* Grill
* Pump
* Question

Green: Things with Handles
You hold these. Literally.
* Bucket
* Drawer
* Mug
* Umbrella

Blue: Fictional Cats
Stripes don’t always mean tiger. Sometimes it’s cartoons.
* Figaro
* Puss
* Salem
* Tom

Purple: Starting with Smooches
This was tricky. Some are slang. Some are physical acts. All start with a kiss. Or involve one.
* Bussin
* Kisser
* Peckish
* Smackdown

Why is “bussin” related to kisses? Don’t ask us. We don’t write the puzzles.

You might have mixed up the green and blue groups. Handle with care? No, hold onto your cat. Or your coffee mug.

How many got purple on the first try? Probably not many.
