Stuck? We get it. Some days the grid fights back.
Today’s Strands puzzle leans hard into New York City basketball history. Specifically. The Knicks. 🏀
The words don’t give themselves up easily. Scramble is understatement. You need a hand? Keep reading. Or check our daily hub for Wordle, Mini Crossword, Connections, and its Sports Edition offshoot. I dig into the rules separately, so skip that part if you’re old hat.
Knicks knack. Hoops champions.
That’s the theme. If those words mean nothing, here’s a breadcrumb trail. Find any word. Three of them. Four letters minimum. The game will cough up a theme hint. It doesn’t matter which three you pick really, but here is what worked for me today:
- CARD
- HAND
- STEM
- DIRT
- DOUR
- NAMES
- BOOM
- STAR
- STARE
- DEAN
- BOOT
Once those hints appear, the rest follows. Mostly.
The Answers
The goal is total board coverage. Every single letter. When you pull the right threads, the pattern snaps into place. You used to think it was always eight theme words. I thought so too. Then I was wrong. The number varies.
Here are the non-spangram hits for today:
- CHANT
- MARQUEE
- RAFTERS
- COURTSIDE
- JUMBOTRON
The Spangram
The big one. The spangram runs from edge to edge. For #839 it is GARDENPARTY.
Start with the G. Top left. First letter on the first row. Wind down. Let it flow. It’s right there if you look at the whole picture rather than hunting for tiny fragments.
Why Some Puzzles Bite
Strands has moods. Some are generous. Others? Brutal. I’ve kept a mental log of the hard ones.
Dated slang is the worst offender. You have to know lingo that might have died before you were born. Toughest word ever: PHAT. Just… yes.
Marine biology isn’t much kinder. Thar she blows. If you aren’t studying cetaceans, good luck. BALEEN is the killer here. Or RIGHT. Depending on your angle.
There is no finish line. Just the next grid. And maybe another headache. Or maybe the click that solves it all. You’ll find out tomorrow.
