Xfinity Mobile has announced a significant restructuring of its wireless service offerings. By replacing its existing lineup with two new, more aggressive plans, the provider aims to offer more high-speed data at a lower entry point for its internet customers.
The New Plan Lineup: More Speed for Less Money
The revamp focuses on two primary tiers designed to replace the company’s previous unlimited offerings. Notably, both new plans offer more high-speed data than their predecessors while reducing the monthly cost per line.
1. Mobile Select
- Price: $30 per line / month
- Data: 50GB of high-speed data (upgraded from 30GB)
- Streaming: HD (720p) resolution
- Hotspot: Unlimited data (speeds reduced after 15GB)
- Replaces: The previous $40/month Unlimited plan.
2. Mobile Plus
- Price: $45 per line / month
- Data: Truly unlimited high-speed data (upgraded from the previous Premium Unlimited plan)
- Streaming: 4K resolution
- Hotspot: Unlimited data (speeds reduced after 50GB)
- Replaces: The previous $50/month Premium Unlimited plan.
Added Value: Protection and Global Connectivity
The Mobile Plus tier introduces several premium features that go beyond simple data allotments. Most notably, it now includes Lifetime Device Protection for phones, tablets, and smartwatches against loss, theft, and damage—a benefit that also applies to customers who bring their own devices. Additionally, users on this plan can upgrade their devices at any time without the need for a trade-in.
To support travelers, both plans include a Global Travel Pass, providing connectivity in over 215 international locations.
The Trade-off: Simplicity vs. Scalability
While the new pricing structure is more straightforward, it introduces a shift in how multi-line families are billed.
Previously, Xfinity utilized a tiered pricing model where the first line was more expensive and subsequent lines were cheaper. Under the new model, the price is fixed per line.
The Math: For a family with four lines on the top-tier plan, the new cost would be $180 per month. Under the old pricing structure, that same family would have paid approximately $140 per month.
While this “flat rate” removes the complexity of calculating different costs for different lines, it may result in higher monthly bills for larger households.
Expanding the Ecosystem: Tablets and Smartwatches
Xfinity is also moving to consolidate secondary device costs. A new family plan for smartwatches and tablets is available for $35 per month, covering up to 10 cellular-enabled devices. This is a more economical alternative to the standard activation fees, which typically cost $20 per tablet line and $10 per smartwatch line.
The Infrastructure: Leveraging the Xfinity Network
The core of Xfinity’s mobile strategy relies on a hybrid connection model. When customers are not connected to a cellular base station—which utilizes Verizon’s 5G network —they rely on Xfinity’s massive infrastructure of 23 million Wi-Fi hotspots.
The company reports that its customers are connected via Wi-Fi approximately 90% of the time. To enhance this, the “Wi-Fi PowerBoost” feature allows compatible phones to reach speeds of up to 1Gbps when connected to an Xfinity hotspot.
Summary
Xfinity Mobile is shifting its strategy toward high-speed data abundance and integrated device protection. While the new flat-rate pricing offers simplicity and lower individual line costs, larger families may see an increase in their total monthly expenditure.
